Pregnancy Nutrition
Need for extra calories arise after first three months only and it could be upto500 calories a day in the last few months of pregnancy. Eating more than the needed amount results in weight gain which is always undesirable so should be avoided promptly. Junk food and fatty food such as sweets, burgers, cold drinks always needs to be avoided. The ideal pregnancy nutrition should be a balanced diet consisting of appropriate amounts of carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, and vitamins as usual.
Special emphasis should be given to include food containing first class proteins, vitamin C, calcium, iron, folic acid. Pregnancy nutrition should include lots of green leafy vegetables, fruits, whole grain, and sprouts to cater the need raised by pregnancy. Supplementation for vitamin and folic acid is also recommended especially during first three months. Supplementation for iron and calcium are started after first three months of pregnancy. Pulses, green vegetables, citrus fruits (like Oranges, lemon, etc), other fruits, milk and milk products are very important during pregnancy. No fatty foods and oily foods are recommended. So, say no to fried foods.
It’s not eating much (eating for two) that is recommended as pregnancy nutrition, it is eating smartly. Need for the increased calorie arises only in later months of pregnancy. The food should be easily digestible and should contain fair amount of fiber to reduce chances of constipation. During pregnancy wrong food habits generally causes constipation. So, to avoid constipation during pregnancy, nutritious food (balanced diet of protein, carbohydrate, vitamins, minerals and fats) including fibers are necessary. As the fetus grows it occupies space so the serving should be small and frequent during pregnancy nutrition.
Food cravings are quite common and normal during pregnancy. It should be handled with care. Too much indulgence in particular food during pregnancy nutrition should be avoided.
Otherwise something would be received in abundance and something would be missed out.
Vomiting and nausea makes it difficult to get proper pregnancy nutrition especially during the first three months of pregnancy, it should be accounted for the inclusion of food supplements to meet the demand of pregnancy nutrition.
For the proper pregnancy nutrition one should go for different colored (natural) food such as green, red, violet, blue, yellow, white etc as these contains different nutrients needed for the body.
