Pregnancy Stages

The nine months of pregnancy could be divided into three stages. These stages are:
First trimester (first three months) , second trimester (forth, fifth, and sixth months), and third trimester (seventh, eighth, and ninth months). Let us discuss the three stages one by one.

First trimester: This stage of pregnancy is the most symptomatic one as the maternal body is taking up new responsibility and undergoing several accommodating changes such as hormonal changes, physiological changes, cardiac function changes, etc. Almost all these changes result in certain symptoms such as increased heartbeat, morning sickness, fatigue, etc. One of the symptoms of pregnancy i.e. nausea and vomiting is most prevalent during this stage of pregnancy which results in weakness and accurate supplement should be taken during this stage of pregnancy. Near the completion of this stage, the baby grows to size of a cherry. The baby will show reflexes, heartbeat and has the ability to move the limbs.

Second trimester: During this stage of pregnancy which comprises of forth, fifth, and sixth months of pregnancy; the most noticeable symptom is the Braxton Hicks contractions. Sleeping problems may also arise during this stage of pregnancy. The gradual increase in the size of belly will take place. The hair will grow all over the body of the baby and the senses of the baby will also develop during this stage of pregnancy. Near the completion of this stage of pregnancy, the size of the baby will be approximately 10 inches. Growth of hair and the development of senses in baby will be noticed during the second trimester. This stage of pregnancy is marked by the start of one of the noticeable experience by the would-be mom i.e. the kicking movement of the baby inside the womb.

Third trimester: The third trimester is evident of the massive growth in the size of the baby and resulting symptoms to the mother such as increased frequency of urination as the bladder is pressed by the growing baby hence cannot hold much amount of urine. The would-be mother should take care of her diet. She should take small and frequent meals. She should not take fatty or rich food in large amounts instead she should take balanced and nutritious food to help the baby grow properly and to prepare herself for healthy delivery. Blood pressure should be monitored frequently during this stage of pregnancy.

During the third trimester growth rate is very high. At the end of seventh month, the size of the baby will be approximately 15 inches. At the end of eighth month, the size of the baby will be approximately 16 to 18 inches. And during the last month of pregnancy, the size of the baby will be more than 20 inches. Other than this is that the fetus will now open his/her eyes and close it. Fetus will also respond to light and the fat accumulation make the body more smooth and soft. Third trimester is also very important at the mothers’ point of view as she may feel backache, leg cramps, heartburn, itching, breathing problem, frequent urination and painless contractions of the uterus.

No matter whatever is the stage of pregnancy, one should always be careful and report to the doctor if any discomfort experienced. Any discomfort caused should not be assumed to be normal without consulting a doctor. At any stage of pregnancy, the intake of any medication should be strictly under the control of a doctor.
